Fran\u00e7ois Lemay founded and led Tenor Audio from 1999 to 2009 and has been obsessively exploring audio for 50 years.<\/em> He offers three exceptional listening rooms where Hommage speakers are powered by only about thirty reference products from 10 manufacturers. Prices are both reasonable and unreasonable, as only musicality matters. <\/p>

The Tenor Audio electronics ($550K to $720K), Kronos turntables ($80K), and the Grimm MU2 ($24K) bring the two Boucherville listening rooms to life. Mine requires little acoustic treatment, but the one my friend Martin Labrecque allows us to share is worthy of a major studio. With the Tenor-Hommage duo, subtle musical nuances become immediately apparent. <\/p>

In Kingsbury, Jocelyn Jeanson assembles the Hommage speakers in the workshop and calibrates them in a carefully acoustically treated room\/laboratory, with Plinius amplification, the MU2, and many other secrets. <\/p>

Lemay Audio is also an informal and passionate audiophile association. Concert tickets, rare CD pressings and box sets, equipment, prints, and listening lists are freely exchanged. True auxiliary laboratories, my clients and friends, in their obsessive quest for absolute musicality, sometimes suggest I listen to new products. With the introduction of the Grimm Audio MU2 and the XACT Phantom this year, I have significantly improved musical quality while eliminating more than 22 components from my chain\u2014on the digital side alone. This may come as a surprise, as one would typically expect specialized, well-powered devices to deliver better performance. However, the Grimm MU2 has replaced all servers, upsamplers, DACs, and often even preamplifiers, along with all associated power cables in our systems. Meanwhile, the XACT Phantom LAN cable has performed a similar role between the router and the server. <\/p>

For weeks, I compared more than 60 combinations: 5 RJ45 cables, 2 digital clocks, 4 converters and 3 optical cables, 3 switches, 6 SFP modules, 2 BNC clock cables, 4 AC power supplies, and 3 DC power supplies. A total of $130,000 in equipment gathered and dedicated solely to this test. Thanks to my clients for lending me their precious devices\u2026 for the sake of science. <\/p>

The surprise was total: the Phantom filters out parasitic noise so effectively that it does all the work alone\u2014except when the router is located dozens of meters from the server, in which case optical isolation may be necessary. After numerous blind tests, a single $4,500 Phantom placed between the router and the Grimm MU2 server consistently outperformed a $45,000 setup in my system. <\/p>

Moral of the story: simplify your system as much as possible by carefully selecting each component. A system is only as good as its weakest link, and price is not always a reliable indicator. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Since 2018, Jocelyn has been assembling and calibrating the Hommage speakers with exemplary patience and precision. With 25 years of expertise in electrostatic panels, he continuously refines every detail. In 2022, we introduced an electrostatic power supply (AE) that was far more powerful, faster, and quieter than the original Dayton Wright model. We thought we had reached the pinnacle, but this year, we dared to make two major advancements: cryogenic transformer and circuits, and the BIPHASE concept. The resulting musical gain exceeded all our expectations, convincing us to offer this technology as an option for all Hommage speakers. Two separate enclosures now allow for the isolation of high voltage from the audio, optimizing the installation. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The new high-voltage circuit alone would deserve a patent. After six months of development based on a theoretical concept never before used for electrostatics, the best industrial components were soldered point to point and then encapsulated with the utmost care. Perfectly suited to our AE, this circuit delivers an impressive gain in power and, above all, in silence, pushing the limits of the Hommage even further. It is now housed in a separate enclosure from the audio, making it more versatile and more efficient. <\/p>

Gene Evely (Take Five Audio) is a master in applying cryogenics to audio. The slow cooling process at -320\u00b0F realigns the crystalline structure of materials, thereby optimizing the performance of cables, printed circuits, and transformers. <\/p>

As always, manufacturer and retailer Lemay Audio delivered a remarkable performance at the show with a system built around a pair of the latest Dayton-Wright Hommage 9.4 open-baffle, time-aligned electrostatic loudspeakers ($68,000 per pair). These were reinforced by a cryogenically-treated 500W audio transformer and an optional Cryo Biphase power supply ($14,000), all finished in genuine California walnut (+$20,000). <\/p>

The system was powered by a Tenor Audio 175S amplifier ($160,000) and a Grimm Audio MU2 DAC\/preamplifier with Qobuz streaming support ($22,000). Cabling was provided by Silversmith and Inakustik, with equipment supports by Modulum. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This demonstration offered one of the most finely structured soundstages I encountered at the show, marked by exceptional focus and image depth. The sound field was expansive and three-dimensional, providing a tangible sense of space between instruments. Transparency was outstanding, with a clarity and sense of organization that highlighted each sonic element with striking precision. The system also stood out for its wide dynamic range, natural tonal balance, refined reverberation, and a rare degree of tonal complexity. <\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Lemay Audio has repeatedly won \u201cBest Room\u201d awards and was once again a serious contender this year. Early on Saturday morning, the room wasn\u2019t yet crowded with visitors, allowing me to listen carefully. <\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Fran\u00e7ois Lemay, also one of the founders of Tenor Audio, is an obsessive enthusiast for optimizing sound quality, both in his products and in the complete system. He was excited to talk about his use of the XACT Phantom LAN cable ($4,500) from Poland, which he optimized by connecting it directly to the Grimm Audio MU2 preamplifier ($24,000), integrated with Roon server, Qobuz, and DAC. According to him, this resulted in about a 15% performance improvement. This direct connection completely eliminated the need for an Ethernet switch. (I\u2019ve experienced a similar breakthrough myself by directly wiring an Audio Sensibility power cord to an old Sony FM tuner that originally used a simple zip-cord.) <\/p>

This one was only available in a short format. It should be noted that the new Polish XACT cable must not be confused with XACT-USA, an offshoot of XACT Engineered Manufacturing Solutions, a private company founded in 1999 in Calgary, Alberta. Both companies are, in fact, major players in the industrial and military cable sectors. <\/p>

The \u201cmonoblocks\u201d used here are the innovative creations of Jocelyn Jeanson, who plays a key role in the loudspeaker\u2019s development. On top sit three transformers that generate a 6,000-volt DC supply for the electrostatic speaker. <\/p>

Each \u201cmonoblock\u201d consists of two distinct elements, as seen here, where Fran\u00e7ois revealed a massive transformer required to amplify the audio signal by a factor of 100 to drive the electrostatic speaker. Fran\u00e7ois mentioned that this large transformer was designed 50 years ago by Mr. Hammond, famed for Hammond transformers. On its own, the speaker\u2019s power block costs $14,000. The audio signal feeding this transformer comes directly from the Tenor Audio 175S stereo amplifier ($160,000), identifiable by its wooden front panel visible in the rack. The copper and aluminum feet used between the different layers\u2014much like in the audio furniture\u2014are from Modulum. <\/p>

Fran\u00e7ois also showed me this diagram revealing the speaker chassis construction. Among other notable system components were Silversmith Fidelium RCA cables ($1,600) and Silversmith ribbon speaker cables ($1,600), also seen in other rooms at the show. Synergistic Research provided the UEF router ($4,000) and Master Fuse ($800). Power cables came from Inakustik (AC-4005 model, $5,000), and the setup was completed with an Inakustik AC-4500 line filter in 120V ($8,000). <\/p>

As is often the case, when I returned to the room at the end of the show on Sunday, it sounded even better.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
